Celebrate the Fourth with Hubert Harrison
The coming Fourth of July weekend will no doubt offer up the familiar American images of cookouts and fireworks as well as tributes to former presidents and the founders of the country. However, for those interested in more obscure but equally fascinating American figure, C-SPAN-2 will be re-broadcasting a discussion with Jeffrey Perry, author of Hubert Harrison: The Voice of Harlem Radicalism.
Harrison was an integral figure in the Harlem Renaissance as a political organizer and cultural critic. As Perry shows in his biography, Harrison is a key unifying link between the two great trends of the Black Liberation Movement: the labor- and civil-rights-based work of Martin Luther King Jr. and the race and nationalist platform associated with Malcolm X.
