The Best Thing in the World

Browning was born in England in 1806, the oldest of 12, and grew up in a Turkish-style mansion. She secretly married Robert Browning, also a poet, amidst the melodrama of paternal opposition and romantic art. She published her first book when she was barely 20. She became the most celebrated female poet of her time. At age 14 she wrote, “My mind is naturally independent and spurns that subserviency of opinion which is generally considered necessary to feminine softness.” Her early works reflect a resistance to her culturally enforced role and an attempt to find a place for herself within a masculine discourse.
